The Rockfort is a bare outcrop older than the Himalayas with a temple on top and 400-odd steps cut into it, giving the best view of the city and the Kaveri. Srirangam, across the river, is the largest functioning temple complex in the world, with seven concentric enclosures and twenty-one gopurams. A guided day covers both properly.
